This workshop will explore the role of intense colour and unconventional sources to develop a portrait from photographic imagery. Students will review and apply basics of facial proportion and colour theory while also considering the influence of music on palette choices and expressionism. A portrait will be completed in class using student-generated tools that can be prepared in advance: a photo series and playlist. Studio work will be supported by slide shows of painters such as Henri Matisse, Alice Neel, Kerry James Marshall, and Jordan Casteel. Oil or acrylic painters welcome. Some painting experience recommended.
