We first introduced you to the captivating world of Nikki Baxendale in our video interview, Capturing the Beauty of The World (Without Shame) with Nikki Baxendale. Since then, Nikki has embarked on a remarkable artist residency, further exploring the depths of her creative process and environmental advocacy.

Fresh from an artist residency that redefined her creative horizons, Nikki merges her corporate acumen with an unwavering commitment to environmental advocacy. Her journey, marked by storytelling and layered mediums, speaks to artists of all ages and experiences.

The Art of Sculptural Painting

Nikki Baxendale’s approach to painting is as dynamic as it is intricate. “As a sculptural painter, I strive to create immersive art experiences through layers of mediums and transparencies,” she shares. With a background in creative direction, storytelling is at the heart of her work. Nikki’s process begins by sculpting the image, revealing textural areas in monochromatic tones to grasp dimension without colour. This foundational step is crucial before introducing hues and textures.

To achieve her desired effects, Nikki relies on top-tier brands like Golden and Liquitex. “Flexible modeling paste from Liquitex and soft modeling paste from Golden are my go-to favorites,” she says. Understanding the compatibility, depths, and dry times of different mediums is essential. “Sometimes, a textural medium can crack, which might be desirable if intentional,” Nikki notes. This meticulous approach allows her to craft the rich textures that define her style.

Opus brand products have been integral to my process, particularly for their reliability and quality. Their materials have consistently supported my creative needs, allowing me to experiment freely and achieve the desired effects,

When it comes to adding colour, Nikki employs a thoughtful approach to enhance the textures and dimensions she has established. By layering transparent and opaque paints, she creates depth and vibrancy in her pieces. "Starting with a solid base of monochromatic tones allows me to play with color more freely, adding layers and highlights to bring the artwork to life," Nikki explains. This method not only enhances the visual appeal but also allows her to maintain control over the composition's overall impact.

Photography: A Passionate Intersection

Photography remains a core passion for Baxendale, providing an immediate way to capture and compose unique perspectives through light and time manipulation. Her extensive studies worldwide have given her a deep understanding of how shapes and energy interplay in images, influencing her freeform painting style.

"I love the immediacy of capturing an image and the challenge of composing unique perspectives through light manipulation and time interruptions," Nikki shares.

This knowledge allows her to paint intuitively, much like cooking without a recipe, drawing inspiration from various sources and experiences.

Environmental Advocacy Through Art

Nikki’s extensive corporate career with giants like Disney, Nickelodeon, and Lululemon has given her a unique perspective on the world. This experience fueled her passion for environmental advocacy, a theme that resonates deeply in her work. “I use art to open conversations about these issues, aiming to inspire a love for the natural world and a call to action,” she says.

My passion for protecting the planet’s importance and beauty is now a calling. I use art to open conversations about these issues, aiming to inspire a love for the natural world and a call to action. As a storyteller, I seek to stir emotions, encourage sharing, and inspire movement. Seeing people moved to tears by my work is the highest gift, as it signifies a profound connection.

Nikki’s dedication to the planet’s beauty and importance is a calling, not just a passion. “Seeing people moved to tears by my work is the highest gift, as it signifies a profound connection,” she reflects.

Nikki Baxendale: Feeding Time
Feeding Time, This giant 105 x 85 inch artwork captures the shadowed form of a humpback whale as it employs the mesmerizing bubble-net feeding technique. The whale surrounds its feast, creating a cylindrical barrier of bubbles that traps its prey in a concentrated area. The piece encompasses over 20 layers of transparencies, crafting a vibrant three-dimensional odyssey. The viewer is drawn into the dynamic scene, witnessing the whale's intelligence and mastery of its underwater environment as it spirals beneath a school of fish, ready to engulf them in one wide-mouthed ascent. This piece will be located at the end of the dining room drawing guests with its vibrant hues

The painting captures serene beauty and quiet grandeur, with crystalline ice formations glistening under soft light, contrasting against deep, inky depths. Two whales gracefully emerge, their colossal forms cutting through the water, evoking tranquility and awe. The composition balances the stark, frozen beauty of the ice with the ethereal presence of the whales, creating a captivating interplay between stillness and movement.

Nikki Baxendale's Transformative Residency

Nikki’s recent residency at Pouch Cove in Newfoundland was a transformative period of uninterrupted creativity. “A typical day started at 6 am and often ended late into the night,” she recalls. Over the 30 days, she showcased 25 pieces in a solo show, marking her second visit to Pouch Cove.

The residency environment was crucial for her creativity. “I maintained a strict routine, showering and dressing in my favorite vintage Lee dungarees, even applying mascara because feeling good keeps me productive,” Nikki shares. Listening to inspiring audiobooks and classical music kept her focus sharp. “The uninterrupted flow of creativity at the residency was a gift, allowing me to delve deeply into my work and mission,” she adds.

Originally, Nikki aimed to experiment without strict plans, but her trajectory shifted dramatically when she accepted the role of Chief Design and Creative Officer for Positive Polar. "This pivotal role aligns all my previous experiences, making it the moment where my career converges," Nikki reflects.

In this position, Nikki is tasked with creating over 600 pieces of photography and fine art, crafting a comprehensive and immersive guest experience aboard Positive Polar’s eco-friendly expedition ship.

Guests will be immersed in art from the moment they see the ship, with giant art wrapping the vessel, galleries, communal spaces, hallways, and even headboards telling a story.

Positive Polar’s mission goes beyond mere expeditions, working with scientists and conservationists to restore whale populations and enhance the ocean’s biological carbon pump. This ensures that every voyage is both educational and impactful, merging adventure with meaningful conservation efforts.

Looking ahead, Nikki aims to partner with significant international galleries that genuinely understand her vision. “My marketing background adds value to these partnerships,” she notes. The journey ahead is an epic adventure, combining art and exploration to impact climate restoration.
