Finishing a Portrait with Mandy Boursicot
PortraitureAbout This Experience
This will be an Artist's Talk featuring the work that Mandy has created for her new solo show at Ian Tan Gallery from May 3 to May 23. The exhibition includes portrait drawings and other figurative works.
During the talk, Mandy will explain how to bring all elements of a portrait together, with a particular focus on hair. Convincing hair is essential for framing a portrait and adding a polished finish to any figurative work. The demonstration will cover four stages of drawing hair: from blocking in the overall shape to adding light and shadow and more. Mandy will also discuss various hair types, including dark, blonde, brunette, straight, wavy, curly, short, long, and braided.

About Your Host

Professional artist and teacher Mandy Boursicot has won international awards and competitions and has been published in Strokes of Genius, among other journals. She studied in an intensive atelier program in Florence. She’s an excellent teacher with experience instructing animators, young professional artists, adults developing personal interests, and children coming to draw for the first time.
She presents a step-by-step method that introduces students to the basic concepts of the classical order of light—line shape and volume. Her progressive exercises are designed to sharpen the skills involved in rounding the form, toning and bringing drawings to a complete finish. Whatever level of drawing and painting students bring to her studio, her well-tested method enhances everyone’s drawing and painting.
With these traditional skills, students can pursue their individual interests. The fundamental concepts and techniques find ready application in all drawing and painting as well as in photography. While the method is rigorous, everyone progresses at their own pace in an encouraging environment.
