The story behind Nitram Fine Art Charcoal

The atelier charcoal named for its founder, spelled backwards.

Martin Gros began making charcoal in the forests of Burgundy, and in 1965 he founded his own company. He named it Nitram: Martin spelled backwards. His son Daniel refined the process and the charcoal became a favourite of academies and ateliers.

Today the Nitram tradition is preserved in Canada. Its process keeps the wood's structure intact, so sticks are stronger and less prone to snapping than ordinary willow or vine charcoal.

Try it in the studio

Sharpen Nitram to a long chisel point on sandpaper. The flat side lays in broad values; the edge gives you crisp, controlled lines.
