Botanical Prints with Jen Burgess
Jacquard CyanotypeAbout This Experience
In this demonstration at our Victoria store, we'll explore the exciting and captivating world of cyanotype—an easy, safe and non-toxic, scientific and historical method of camera-less photography.
After sharing a very brief synopsis of its history, Jen Burgess will demystify the entire process, and demonstrate step-by-step all the techniques you'll need to make gorgeous botanical prints of your own: from preparing the solution, treating your surface, planning and organizing your composition, creating negatives, exposing your print, developing your image, and later displaying it in your home. We will also discuss its potential for use in creative mixed-media applications and use on alternative surfaces. If time permits, participants can try their hand at exposing and developing a test print of their own on some pre-treated paper.

About Your Host
Jen Burgess is an interdisciplinary artist based in Victoria, BC, with training in scientific illustration. Jen is most passionate about connecting nature with the creative process & art making, as an essential part of maintaining mental health, wellness and resilience through life's ups and downs. Jen is constantly inspired by the nature of the West Coast and our city of gardens. She is well-versed in drawing, watercolour, gouache, digital, and acrylics; she has taken up cyanotype in the last two years. Cyanotype appeals due to its fascinating history, "instant gratification" in the development process, and its relationship with place and time. The unexpected results that follow are an antidote to the slow, meticulous perfectionism of accurate illustration work. Jen has been in the arts scene of Victoria since 2018, where she has taught classes outdoors and online and displayed her art at market events in town, but presently she is most well-known as an employee at Opus, where she freely shares her knowledge with those who seek it.
