The story behind Sennelier Pastels & Oil Sticks

The Paris colour shop across from the Louvre that made oil pastels for Picasso.

Gustave Sennelier opened his colour shop on the Quai Voltaire in Paris in 1887, across the Seine from the Louvre, and supplied painters of the day. In 1949 the family developed artist-quality oil pastels at Pablo Picasso's request.

For more than 130 years Sennelier has combined the traditions of the old masters with modern chemistry, delivering vibrant, lasting colour.

Try it in the studio

Sennelier oil pastels are soft enough to blend with a fingertip. Layer light over dark, then scratch back through (sgraffito) for crisp highlights.
