Copal resin, also known as Gum copal or manila copal, is a natural resin native to Indonesia produced by the semi-fossilized sap of a tree belonging to the Fabaceae family, genus Daniellia. Soluble in ethanol and ketone solvents that is often by artists used to make isolating varnishes.
Copal resin is mainly used as a raw material for industrial and fine arts varnishes because it produces lustrous, elastic finishes with good weathering properties. These varnishes are used in the manufacture of wood and paper products. Other applications include linoleum, oilcloth, printing inks, adhesives and floor and shoe polish. Copal has also found application in the manufacture of dental products.
