This is a contemporary conservation-grade sizing for fabric supports. Due to its neutral pH, PVA size is recommended for use on linen or cotton canvas, instead of rabbit skin glue. It provides a tough seal for fabric, and does not re-absorb atmospheric moisture that can cause shrinking and swelling like rabbit skin glue.

Can this be applied to watercolor paper for painting with oils?

Great question!

Gamblin PVA Size can be used to prepare watercolor paper for oil painting. Heavy water media papers, including watercolor, mixed-media, and some printmaking papers, can be used for oil painting once they are properly treated with Gamblin PVA Size.

Here's how you can use Gamblin PVA Size on watercolor paper:

- Apply PVA Size to the side of the paper that will be painted with oil colors.
- To prevent wrinkling, you may need to tape the paper down to a rigid panel before applying the PVA Size.
- Allow the sized paper to dry completely before removing the tape.
- Most papers will require two coats of PVA Size for proper sealing.
- Make sure to let the freshly sized paper dry completely (usually around 24 hours) before applying Oil Ground and/or Artists Oil Colors.
