The science of geology is fascinating because it is the study of the Earth itself. Some of the earth’s rocks are four billion years old. This workshop explores many facets of geology from detailed drawing of individual rocks to mixed media renditions of cliff faces to collage paintings of beneath the earth’s surface. Students will use graphite, ink, charcoal, conté crayon, watercolour, and collage. Inspiration will come from actual rocks sourced from around the world, historical geology textbooks such as James Hutton’s 'Theory of the Earth' (1785), photographs, educational posters, as well as artists including Jean Dubuffet, Max Ernst, Vija Celmins, Per Kirkeby, Anselm Kiefer, and Laura Rosenthal McManus. Suitable for all levels.
