The story behind Schmincke

Meliora cogito: four generations striving for the best colour.

Hermann Schmincke and Josef Horadam founded Schmincke in Düsseldorf in 1881. Their motto, Meliora cogito ("I strive for the best"), still guides the company.

Horadam Aquarell is its finest watercolour, joined by modern innovations like the Supergranulating series and AQUA DROP liquid watercolour. Tradition and experimentation sit side by side.

Try it in the studio

Drop a Supergranulating colour into a wet wash and leave it alone: the pigments separate and settle into textures you cannot paint on purpose.
