About This Experience

Many decisions are involved in composing a painting: size, orientation, colour palette, references, and more.  At this visual artist talk, Nicole will share the process of composing one of her figurative paintings, from the initial sketch to the finished work.  Creativity and emotional impact are prioritized over strict realism to build a painting that aligns with your vision and goals.  Participants will learn about the armature, colour chords, and adjusting anatomy to serve the painting's needs better.

About Your Host

Host image

Nicole Sleeth is a figurative oil painter whose work centers on the female gaze as an exploration of power, connection, and lived experience. She brings a classical understanding of the human form and oil painting to her contemporary representations of the nude female figure.

Sleeth explores themes of intimacy, introspection, mortality, and inner/outer worlds. Her works demonstrate a search for a liberated self, at times competing with an acute awareness of the viewer. Subtle, shimmering skin tones create a sense of tactile closeness, with large-scale paintings taking on a commanding bodily presence.

Since 2010, Sleeth’s paintings have been exhibited in Canada and the United States, showing alongside works by Lucien Freud and Alex Colville, among others. Her work is in private collections in Canada, the United States, England, Argentina, and Singapore and in the public Civic Art Collection, City of St. John's, Canada. She lives and works in Carbonear, Newfoundland.
