The story behind Williamsburg Handmade Oil Colors

Handmade oils ground pigment by pigment, the way a painter would.

Painter Carl Plansky began making oil paint in the Williamsburg neighbourhood of Brooklyn in the mid-1980s. Instead of standardising every colour, he ground each pigment to bring out its own beauty and luminosity.

Since 2010 the paints have been handmade by Golden Artist Colors in New Berlin, New York, keeping Carl's recipes and approach alive.

Try it in the studio

Notice how each colour handles differently, some buttery and some stiff. That is the pigment showing through. Use the Williamsburg mixer to plan exact mixes.
