Pennylane Shen led an exciting and energized workshop for Opus Members - April 18, 2026

On April 18th, Opus Art Supplies hosted one of the most energizing and practical events in our Professional Artist's Workshop series: Navigating the Art Industry with Pennylane Shen. Designed for professional and emerging artists ready to make a real career of their creative practice, the workshop drew an engaged audience full of thoughtful questions — and the conversation that unfolded was exactly the kind that artists need to have.

Pennylane Shen, artist consultant, curator, and educator behind the renowned Dazed & Confucius, brought her signature blend of sharp industry insight, real-world experience, and genuine enthusiasm for artists' success. The energy in the room was palpable from start to finish.

About the Workshop

Navigating the Art Industry is a unique 3-hour seminar designed specifically for emerging artists preparing to approach the commercial and public art industry. It's ideal for fine artists of any medium pursuing careers in the commercial art market or looking to expand their exhibition repertoire.

This intensive session is a condensed version of Pennylane's highly regarded 12-week course, which has been taught at NYC Crit Club, Mastrius, Langara College, and Thrive Together Network. It combines theory, industry experience, and practical, actionable resources — everything an emerging artist needs to move forward with clarity and confidence.

The workshop covered six core topic areas:

  1. Presentation — portfolio building, application letters, CVs, submissions, and proposals

  2. Approaching the Gallery Industry — types of galleries, roles, and representation

  3. Alternative Exhibition and Marketing Options — juried exhibitions, non-profit art spaces, group shows, and more

  4. Commercial Gallery Procedures and Guidelines — payment, contracts, shipping, and framing

  5. Promotional Development — publications, websites, social media, and artist biographies

  6. Standard Practices — pricing, hanging, framing, documentation, editions, and reproductions

Ears perked up when Pennylane talked about pricing your artwork — a topic that is of interest to most artists who want to sell their work.

A Conversation That Got Real

What made this workshop particularly special was the quality of the audience's engagement. Attendees came prepared — with genuine questions rooted in real situations they were facing. From navigating gallery rejections to pricing work for the first time, the conversation moved fluidly between theory and lived experience. Pennylane met every question with candour, expertise, and practical direction. It was the kind of dialogue that only happens when a room full of artists feels safe enough to be honest about what they don't know.

Top 5 Takeaways from Navigating the Art Industry

1. There Isn't Just One Way In

Commercial galleries are only one part of the ecosystem. Public galleries, artist-run spaces, pop-ups, online platforms, and self-initiated projects all offer valid — and often more accessible — entry points. Understanding where your work fits (and where it doesn't) is key to building momentum early on.

2. Your Artist Toolkit Is Your First Impression

A clear CV, strong artist statement, professional website, and cohesive documentation aren't optional — they're foundational. Galleries, curators, and collectors make decisions quickly, and clarity beats quantity every time. A refined toolkit signals readiness and often separates emerging artists from those taken seriously. We also loved the idea of having a great takeaway card to remind potential buyers/collectors what your artwork looks like and give them your contact information, too.

Audience members were invited to check out a selection of Takeaway cards designed for artists to use as self-promotion tools. These takeaway cards all showcase the artist's work beautifully and contain their contact information — like a big business card with a lot more impact.

3. Fit Matters More Than Exposure

Not every gallery, opportunity, or platform is the right one. The strongest opportunities come from mutual fit, not mass outreach. Strategic positioning is something many artists overlook — but it's often the turning point.

4. Pricing Is Strategy, Not Guesswork

Pricing should reflect a balance of costs, market context, and venue — not emotion. Document your numbers, understand your audience, and build in room to grow. A structured pricing framework can save years of trial and error.

5. Visibility Needs Structure, Not Just Effort

Whether it's your website or Instagram, consistency and clarity matter more than constant output. Strong visuals, intentional storytelling, and clear calls to action outperform sporadic posting every time.
