Spring Flowers with Marcela Strasdas
Gamblin Oil PaintsAbout This Experience
Spring is in the air! If you like suggestion, energetic brushwork, and vibrant colour, then this demo is for you. Join Marcela Strasdas as she paints spring flowers in oils. She will be sharing step by step the process she follows when painting with oils. Learn about Transparent and Opaque pigments and how to build up the layers in an alla prima way.
She will go over how to pull elements from different reference materials and put it all together into dynamic studies that can be paintings in themselves or serve as a jumping board for bigger and bolder pieces. People can paint along or just watch. Ideally, participants would have their own reference photo similar to the one posted here.

About Your Host

Marcela Strasdas is an Argentinian-Canadian painter who loves painting landscapes, still-lifes and florals. She is greatly inspired by traveling and gardening, the starting point of colourful, vibrant paintings. She has received instruction, inspiration and mentorship from many renowned artists she admires. She strongly believes there is no end to learning and growing as an artist, so she continues to study and learn as much as possible on a daily basis.
Direct observation and plein-air work are an intrinsic part of her process. She regularly paints outdoors with a couple of groups in her hometown of Victoria, BC. She has also painted in many areas of the world like BC, the Bugaboos, Lake Tahoe, Italy, Hawaii, and the Arctic Tundra just to name a few.
Marcela has been a very active member of the arts community in Victoria, BC for many years. She was an important leader in the development of several local events and organizations. She has participated in numerous juried and non-juried art exhibitions across Canada.
“I am a painter with a passion for flowers, gardens, traveling and the ocean. It all gets translated into colourful paintings that reflect all the beauty I see around me. Painting allows me to remember places I have been, moments I have lived. Plein air painting allows me to freeze those moments in time and helps me see things I can’t catch at first glance. Everything changes after I have been looking at the same scene for more than ten minutes: Colours intensify and change, light shifts, I start finding shapes within shapes. Magic starts to happen. It’s the best way for me to slow down, pause and enjoy the moment.”
