About This Experience

Join Carla Flegel this spring to learn how to paint beautiful floral designs!

Flowers showcase stunning gradients and color blends, making them ideal subjects for the soft blending achieved through wet-on-wet watercolor techniques. To create depth, shape, and dimension in your paintings, it is crucial to evaluate the 'value' of these colors, which helps in depicting cast shadows and form shadows.

In this project, we will create six different 4x6 flower designs that can easily be used for cards. Patterns to assist with this project can be found at the bottom of the materials list.

Carla Flegel has embraced creativity as an integral part of her identity for most of her life. Primarily a self-taught painter, she began her artistic journey during the Folk Art Craze of the '80s. Her paintings are often described as ‘painterly, colorful, and happy.’ As a “skills-focused instructor,” Carla is passionate about encouraging beginner painters to truly observe the world around them and to experience the joy and fulfillment that comes from a creative lifestyle.

She is an active member of the Arrowsmith and Nanaimo chapters of the Canadian Federation of Artists. While her early works were primarily in oils and acrylics, Carla has recently gravitated towards watercolor as her medium of choice. She finds the unpredictability of water, paint, and paper coming together to be nothing short of magical.

Carla serves as a faculty instructor at the McMillan Art Center (MAC) in Parksville, BC, and at the CENAC Arts Center in Melaque, Mexico. She teaches beginner and intermediate watercolor classes, leads urban sketching outings, and conducts plein-air adventures in the Oceanside area as well as in Mexico through her initiatives RoamingArt.ca and MySketchyFriends.com. Throughout her career, she has received awards in plein-air painting competitions and has been recognized in FCA shows. In Oceanside, Carla’s work is represented by several venues, including the Salish Sea Gallery, the Sandbar Cafe and Gallery, the MacMillan Center Gift Shop, and the Qualicum Art Supply and Gallery.
