Professional Quality, Made More Accessible: The Growing Opus Essential Range
Meet the newest addition to Opus Essential: artist-quality canvases designed to give oil and acrylic painters a dependable surface at an accessible price.
Good materials matter. They affect how paint moves, how colour behaves, how a surface responds—and ultimately, how freely an artist can work.
But choosing quality materials shouldn’t mean having to reserve them only for special projects.
That idea is at the heart of Opus Essential: a broad range of professional-quality art materials created to offer the performance artists need at a price that makes them practical to use every day.
From paints and mediums to papers, sketchbooks, drawing materials and studio staples, the Essential range has grown to become the foundation of the Opus private-label collection. And now, with the introduction of Opus Essential Artists’ Canvases, that same philosophy extends to one of the most fundamental materials in an oil or acrylic painter’s studio: the surface itself.
What Makes a Product an Opus Essential?
The name is intentional.
Opus Essential products are the workhorses of an artist’s practice: the materials you reach for regularly, experiment with freely, learn with, build paintings with, and depend on from one project to the next.
They are designed for artists who want professional-quality performance without necessarily needing—or wanting—to move into the price range of premium or specialized materials.
That can mean an art student developing their practice, an emerging artist producing a growing body of work, a dedicated painter spending several days a week in the studio, or an experienced artist looking for dependable materials that make sense for everyday use.
The common thread is that accessible doesn’t have to mean compromised.
Our Essential paints, for example, are formulated as artist-quality colours, with the pigment load, colour strength and working properties painters expect from professional materials. Across the broader collection, the goal remains the same: to offer materials that perform reliably and give artists room to concentrate on their work rather than on the limitations of their supplies.
Professional quality should be something artists can work with—not something they feel they need to save.
A New Essential for Oil and Acrylic Painters
With the arrival of Opus Essential Artists’ Canvases, we’re extending that philosophy from the paint on your palette to the surface beneath it.
Canvas is one of the most frequently used—and frequently purchased—materials in an oil or acrylic studio, so having a strong artist-quality option at an accessible price is particularly important.
The new canvases have been brought into the Opus range to flesh out our existing canvas selection, providing another distinct choice for painters alongside our other canvas offerings.
They give artists a dependable, ready-to-paint surface for everything from regular studio practice and studies to commissions, exhibitions and finished work, while maintaining the value-driven positioning of the Essential range.
Built for the Studio
Each Opus Essential Artists’ Canvas begins with 100% cotton canvas, weighing 200–210 gsm before priming. It is prepared with three coats of white acrylic gesso, bringing the finished surface to approximately 380 gsm and creating a bright, evenly primed ground ready for oil or acrylic colour.
The canvas is stretched over sturdy kiln-dried pine stretcher bars with a substantial 1½" deep profile.
That depth gives the canvas a strong contemporary presence on the wall and makes it particularly appealing for paintings that may be displayed without a frame. At the same time, the surface is versatile enough to support a wide range of painting approaches—from thinner applications and glazing through layered brushwork and heavier passages of paint.
Each canvas also includes eight stretching keys, allowing artists to make adjustments to the tension of the canvas if needed over time.
Twelve Sizes. More Room to Make.
One of the goals in adding the Essential canvas range was to give painters useful choices without making the selection unnecessarily complicated.
The collection comes in 12 versatile sizes ranging from 8" × 8" to 36" × 48".
That means the same familiar surface can move with you from a small colour study to a larger studio painting. You can experiment on one size, develop an idea on another, or work across a series while knowing what to expect from the surface underneath your paint.
And because value is fundamental to the Essential philosophy, artists can feel more freedom to make.
Try the idea. Start another canvas. Paint over something. Work through a series. Make studies before the finished piece—or let the study become the finished piece.
Quality materials should support that kind of exploration.
A Range Designed Around the Way Artists Work
The addition of canvas also makes the Opus Essential collection feel more complete.
An acrylic painter can now reach for Essential paint, mediums, brushes and canvas. An oil painter can build a palette with Essential Oil Colours and work on an Essential surface. Watercolourists can choose Essential paints alongside Essential watercolour papers, while drawing and mixed-media artists can find papers, sketchbooks and other everyday studio materials within the range.
They’re different products, but they share the same purpose:
Professional-quality materials that artists can confidently make part of their regular practice.
There will always be reasons to choose premium, highly specialized or traditional materials, and those choices remain an important part of the artist’s toolbox. Essential occupies a different—and equally important—place.
It’s the reliable middle ground between compromising on quality and paying for more than you need.
Quality Should Be Within Reach
For more than fifty years, Opus has worked with artists, students, educators and creative communities, and one thing remains clear: artists make more when good materials are within reach.
That is what we want Opus Essential to make possible.
Materials you don’t have to save for someday.
Quality you can build a practice around.
Products that give you the confidence to concentrate on the work in front of you.
With the arrival of Opus Essential Artists’ Canvases, there’s now one more Essential ready for the studio.
