Join the Federation of Canadian Artists for their largest educational and social event of the year: a week-long plein air painting experience set in the breathtaking landscapes of Nova Scotia. Capture the dramatic beauty of the Bay of Fundy, home to some of the highest tides in the world, and explore the rolling hills and vineyards of the Annapolis Valley, along with other hidden gems across the province.
Guided by Master Instructors Ann Willsie, SFCA, and James Middleton, this immersive adventure will ignite your creativity and refine your skills through hands-on plein air painting. In the evenings, artists can unwind, connect with peers at engaging social events, or enjoy quiet moments to relax and explore the stunning surroundings.

About Wolfville, Nova Scotia:
Located in Kings County, Nova Scotia, approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) northwest of Halifax, Wolfville is a charming town nestled between mountains and the highest tides in the world. Situated in the Annapolis Valley, it boasts stunning natural beauty and a youthful, vibrant food and arts culture. Known for its temperate climate, Wolfville is part of Canada’s third-largest fruit-growing region, attracting both wineries and apple growers.
Close to the Bay of Fundy, famous for its dramatic tidal bore, Wolfville is home to Acadia University, several vineyards, cultural festivals, the world’s largest foodie film festival, and a beloved Saturday farmers’ market. In addition, Wolfville offers areas of outstanding natural beauty and historic significance, including the Grand-Pré UNESCO World Heritage Site, once the largest Acadian settlement, which reflects the rich traditions of both European settlers and First Nations cultures.
Surrounded by stunning landscapes, you'll spend your days creating, painting, and refining your skills during en plein air sessions with fellow participants and instructors. In the evenings, unwind with a range of social events or take the opportunity to relax and explore the charming surroundings of Wolfville.
Meet the 2025 Plein Air Art Retreat Master Instructors
Ann Willsie, SFCA
Ann Willsie is a Canadian artist known for her large-scale panoramic landscapes and florals. Her bold brushstrokes and thick oil paint create vibrant, contemporary impressionistic works that capture the essence of nature. Ann’s landscapes often feature gnarly trees, shifting grasses, and hidden marshes, while her florals invite the viewer to connect with the rhythm and tranquility of the natural world.
In recent years, Ann has developed a passion for plein air painting, participating in major events across the country. She continues to promote plein air painting and workshops nationwide.

Ann is a Senior Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and an Associate Member of the Oil Painters of America. Her passion for painting, combined with her extensive experience as a Master Instructor, ensures that participants will gain invaluable insights and guidance during this immersive plein air adventure.
James Middleton
James Middleton is a Canadian landscape and portrait artist and workshop instructor based in Nova Scotia. Known for his impressionistic realism, James captures the natural world with a focus on light, atmosphere, and the interplay of colour. His work is inspired by masters like Richard Schmid, Joaquín Sorolla, and John Singer Sargent, whose teachings have shaped his approach to plein air painting.
James’ landscape painting journey was transformed after attending workshops with Albert Handell and Richard Schmid, deepening his passion for outdoor painting.

He is a member of the Ontario Plein Air Society, Plein Air Painters of the Bay of Fundy, and several other prestigious groups. Through his teaching, James encourages artists to embrace the challenges and beauty of painting en plein air, helping them refine their skills while capturing the essence of the landscape.
Retreat Fees Include:
4 days of instruction with the chance to paint with each Master Instructor
All evening social activities
3 meals and all snacks daily for the duration of your stay
5 nights accommodation
1 goodie bag per artist registrant

For the Federation's Plein Air Art Retreat, participants will stay in classic hotel-style rooms at Acadia, offering comfortable accommodations with all the essential amenities, ensuring a restful and convenient stay while immersed in the town's vibrant atmosphere.
