Customers praise this varnish spray for even application and protection. It "adds richness to canvas" and "brings out colour nuances," with UV protection. Works well on various mediums including acrylics, oils, pastels, and collages. Many note strong odor requiring ventilation. Some concerns about finish being duller than expected.

  • Adds a richness to the canvas- brings out colour nuances.
  • It hasn't saturated my medium or clumped when sprayed.
  • Worked perfect for my project. Sprayed evenly

I’m liking it

I’ve started using the Windsor & Newton varnish spray and find it works well on my paper collages for exhibition. It hasn’t saturated my medium or clumped when sprayed. I also wanted a varnish that has a UV protectant and this seems to do the job.

Easy to use

I was happy to see in very fine print that this is uv protective, they don’t feature that for some reason. It’s super stinky, but as long as it’s applied in the fresh air it’s ok. And it dries quickly

Dull finish

This varnish is labled as Satin finish but it is very dull...more like a matt finish.

Would you please clarify the term “wait until oil paintings are thoroughly dry before varnishing. It used to be approximately 1 year, is that the norm using Winsor Newton paints in current times?

Opus Art Supplies

Hi Virginia,

For oil paints, you are correct on the time for them to fully cure before varnishing being approximately 1 year, however, if you wish to varnish it sooner, I would suggest using Gamvar instead. With Gamvar you only have to wait until the paint has fully hardened in the thickest spots (you can test this with a finger nail to see if it leaves an indent in an inconspicuous spot), and then you can apply the Gamvar on top. It's unique from other varnishes, as it allows the paint to continue to cure after it has been applied.
