Opus Essential Gesso est un gesso de qualité artistique, idéal pour la préparation des surfaces non apprêtées comme la toile, le lin, le bois et le papier. Ce gesso épais, d'un blanc éclatant, offre une opacité, une adhérence et une résistance à l'eau maximales, et sèche en un fini mat, souple et non jaunissant. Opus Essential Gesso contient une forte teneur en dioxyde de titane, en grains de calcite et en résine acrylique. Appliquez 2 à 4 couches selon vos besoins.

Only gesso I use. Reasonably priced and coats quite well. Made in Canada!
Using this gesso as a paint works great. For example you can paint frames or items to be used in a still life and the brush strokes don't show. I use the black to paint frames.
You could also add other acrylic colors if you want

On the plus side, it's white, provides some tooth and absorbency. But, after I first used it, subsequent uses (separated by a couple of weeks) always had lumpy surface skins in it. Maybe this happens with all gesso. One solution is to strain the gesso through a filter before use, a preferable solution would be improved packaging -a tube, so that the air can be removed before storage.

I've been purchasing GESSO from OPUS for a couple of decades now, and have tried a number of brands. I was fairly satisfied with the essental OPUS brand at first (other than the smell and its tendency to clump a bit) I have been using it for a couple years now regularly, however I can't tolerate it anymore. I don't know if the mixture has changed but I am on my 6th pail of this brand and have consistently gotten more and more sick every time I use it. My studio is pretty well ventilated but I even tried applying the product outdoors the last two times however the fumes still made me nauseas, dizzy and completely ill, I got such a terrible headache I ended up vomitting. It's awful and I will be switching back to GOLDEN. I actually miss the BUZZ gesso as it was economical and I felt the coverage was great. Sad that BUZZ is gone and sad the OPUS GESSO brand is obviously quite toxic.
Great primer for wood or canvas substrate.
I love it one coat and it drys fast one coat is all you need.
Smells like house oil paint from the 90s. Made me nauseous. Seems like latex more than polymer. Dries on the container similarly to watercolour masking fluid. Hoping it works well as a base for my oil paintings and nothing will flake off.

covers well but bubbly result was frustratiny
i find this gesso so-so. it does good for coverage, but has a lot more bubbles than other brands, lot of time running brush back over to remove bubbles in each coat

I'm constructing a jewelry box and a makeup organizer and the Essential Black Gesso I purchased has amazing coverage and just the right amount of tooth for this project.
Works very well for covering old works you might want to repaint, also works very well before starting a new painting.
I have been shopping at Opus for decades, both personally and for the classes I taught. I have been pleased with all products I have purchased. I really like Opus gesso. I recently started using Opus online shopping, and i gotta add...it's awesome! Great products and perfectly packed (specially packed and i loved that, too! you'll have to order so you know what i mean cuz it contains a surprise...grin) thank you Opus !
Opus Gesso is as good as any of the other brands. So save your money and buy Opus. Be a member and get you discount too !
Have been using it for years. Only need two coats for a primer on my boards..
I stretch and gesso all my own canvases and I find the big bucket format very convenient. The gesso is great quality.
I’m very satisfied. I painted with traditional oil and it didn’t sink into the canvas . 3 coats is ideal even over unprimed canvas .
