The West Side Art Walk – Artists in Our MidstApril 2, 2009
Explore, enjoy, discover! Imagine a grassroots organization of artists opening their studios to the public every year for 17 years! This describes Artists in Our Midst. Enjoy the 17th annual Artists in Our Midst on April 23rd, 25th and 26th in Vancouver. This year, events will be held in three neighbourhoods on all three days, they are free and open to the public, so come and enjoy!
Our 41 artists have many diverse backgrounds and interests. Some of the artists have been with the group for many years, but this year we have a whopping 20 new members! Glenda Lesnoff paints with a group of 4 women at the “Studio on the Hill”, which Jane McBride built by converting her garage. They are a group of women from all walks of life who have come together once a week for several years to paint. Their studio is a small community by itself, and three of the artists will be connecting to the larger Vancouver art community by participating in Artists in Our Midst for the first time.

Also this year, Arists in Our Midst is participating in the community through Kaya Murray, an artist in residence at Lord Byng Secondary, who will be working with students on a community project which, when finished, will be on display at the Thursday night opening at the school. Kaya has been working with two classes of grade 11 & 12 art students who had to audition to be part of the program. The students expressed an interest in learning landscape painting techniques, so Kaya gave a historical presentation of great landscape artists, ranging in style from realist to abstract expressionist to Japanese woodcuts. She gave demos and assigned exercises which used nature or photographic references. Both classes have already begun their presentation pieces for the show (and fully one-third have been using cell phones and other small screen devices to work with their artistic references). Kaya reports that the group is full of talent and is a joy to work with. Byng teacher John Hartley-Fowes reports that the landscapes the students are working on will be featured in an upcoming ReMax Calendar!

Opening night is Thursday, April 23, 2009, 7-9 p.m. at Lord Byng Secondary (West 16th Avenue at Crown Street). All artists will be present with some of their work on display. Decide which studios you would like to visit on the weekend and enjoy an evening of entertainment, music and community art. The walk itself will take place in the artists’ studios from 12-6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday April 25th and 26th. That’s 41 artists in more than 26 studios! Maps can be found in brochures all around town and on the website: www.artistsinourmidst.com
