Artists Biography
Bonnie Marklund

During a two-month visit to Osooyos, British Columbia with her husband in 2006, Bonnie joined the Osooyos Artists’ Guild. The encouragement she received from the group lit a spark that ignited her hunger for artistic expression, and her artistic passion was born. Now, every free moment was spent pouring through art and art instruction books and practicing the new techniques she learned from the books and other artists.

Since then, Bonnie has completed hundreds of works of various sizes from fridge magnet-size to room sized murals in a variety of media including watercolour, acrylic and oil paints, a variety of plaster products to sculpture her bas relief, three-dimensional works before painting.

In 2008, she opened Mountain Driftwood Gallery and Lodging in Valemount, BC where she has a number of her works for sale.

Since moving to Valemount, Bonnie has been very active in the local arts and crafts community, including the local Wednesday Morning Art Group, the Valemount Arts and Cultural Society, the Crafters Guild of Valemount, and a number of local galleries. One of her early projects created the “Date with Art 2009” calendar featuring the juried art work of a number of Valemount artists including hers. The popular calendar was available for local sale before Christmas and was sold out early in the new year.

In early 2009, Bonnie became the President of the Valemount Arts and Cultural Society, serving for a term and a half. During her tenure, she was instrumental in the formation of the Canoe Mountain Gallery, which was housed in the Valemount Information Centre.

Bonnie has also been a regular plein air artist for the Valemount Spring Festival and has exhibited at the Valemountain Days Art Show, and was an artist and facilitator at the plein air painting event at the Mt Robson Marathon held in 2011. In 2010, Bonnie was a founding member of the Crafters Guild of Valemount.

In the past four years, Bonnie has taught watercolour courses in Valemount on several occasions. She has also taken part in the Wells art mentorship program in 2009.

In 2011, Bonnie joined artistic talents with local artists Pamela Cinnamon and Keith Heidorn to form the “Pine Beetle Painters”. Their first work “Mumm’s the Word” is shown in Bonnie’s selection examples of her work. The collaboration was unique on this three panel work as each artist worked independently on each panel, then the three came together to put on the final brush strokes. The work now hangs in the Calgary office of Kinder-Morgan.

Bonnie continues to paint and teach locally and on her travels. She has performed a number of commissioned works including large three-dimensional murals in private homes.

Come to her retreat and "Be Still and Know" and get lost in your art.
