What exactly are “soft” pastels and how do you use them? Find out with Jenny Auld!

What exactly are “soft” pastels and how do they differ from oil pastels? Where do “chalk” pastels fit into the picture? When you use pastels, are you drawing or painting? In this demo, Jenny Auld will unpack these questions and create a still life using soft pastels of various types. Soft pastels are a vibrant, versatile and portable medium for when you want colour on the go! Jenny will also discuss the effectiveness of soft pastel for working outdoors.

Jenny Auld trained in fine arts at Langara College and linguistics at UBC. She began PhD studies at Edinburgh in linguistics before returning to her roots as a visual artist. Auld trained in calligraphy and egg tempera in Scotland and New York City. Her passion as a teacher is in demystifying art techniques, and in helping people of all ages recover their confidence in art-making. Jenny has a particular love for Taiwan, where she is represented by Art Sui gallery in Linkou, New Taipei City.
