PAINTING THE LANDSCAPE

Description

In this class, you will develop the technical skills to create landscape paintings with beautiful and convincing space. Choose to work from either an urban or natural landscape photos, supplied by the teacher, or bring your own. Emphasis will be placed on composition, colour mixing, drawing, and how to paint various types of light and shadow. Learn about linear and atmospheric perspective, how to mix colours to create a harmonious effect of light, and how to paint impressionistic trees, rocks, clouds and more.

Suppy List

Below is the (suggested) materials list. While all of these materials can be found at Opus Art Supplies, similar products from other stores are fine. No need to bring everything, simply bring what you would like to work with each class.

1) PAINT

We recommend using artist grade oil paint, although feel free to bring whatever you have, or you can work in acrylics if you choose.

Colour Palette

• Titanium White

• Cadmium Yellow Lemon & Cadmium Yellow Pale (or bring whatever bright yellows you have)

• Yellow Ochre

• Cadmium Red Medium

• Alizarin Crimson

• Ultramarine Blue

• Sap Green

• Viridian

• Transparent Oxide Brown (or Burnt Umber)

• Transparent Oxide Red (or Burnt Sienna)

• Optional: Ivory Black

2) MEDIUM

• Odourless mineral spirits (please bring Gambol brand ONLY, small bottle)

• Refined linseed oil (small bottle)

• Acrylics: Small spray bottle for water, to keep your paint wet.

• Optional: Acrylic Retarder to extend drying time

3) BRUSHES

• Bring a few long-handled brushes between sizes 2 and 8

• Recommended: Synthetic Filberts (sizes 4, 6 and 8)

• 1 Bristle Filbert, Bright or Flat (any size between 10 and 12)

• 1 Synthetic Round (size 0)

• In addition to this list, please bring sizes and shapes you’re comfortable with

4) SURFACE

• Bring 1 canvas, canvas board or wood panel: any size between 8x10” and 12”x16”

• I strongly recommend gessoed panel (not canvas or canvas board, but they are fine if you prefer them)

• Prep: Add 3 layers of gesso.

5) PALETTE

• Oils: If using oils, you can bring a disposable palette, a wood palette, or some easels come with their own

• Acrylics: If using acrylics, please bring a disposable palette

6) PALETTE KNIVES

• Any size, although we recommend the Liquitex ‘Small Painting Knife’ #8

7) PAPER TOWEL

• 1 roll of extra absorbent paper towel. We recommend ‘Scott’s Shop Towels’ (blue or white), found at painting/ lumber stores.

8) DRAWING • Please bring a sharpie marker with a fine point, or something similar.

• Optional: A set of grey markers in different values (Copic and Tombow are good brands)

9) SKETCHBOOK

• Used for drawing preparatory sketches and for taking notes and doing various homework exercises

10) CLOTHING

• Painting can be messy, please bring suitable clothing
