Beauty in Aging with Annette Nieukerk
March 07, 2020
Saturday, March 7 11:00AM – 12:30PM
Saturday, March 7 2:00 – 3:30PM
Annette will be presenting her most recent body of work which focuses on the aging female form as subject matter. Her series ‘In Praise of Older Women’ embraces the aging of women’s bodies and the experiences – stories of births, deaths, loves, losses, joys and sorrows – that are etched so gracefully into the folds of her skin. The addition of the flowers in her work enhances and echoes the female form – symbolic of grace, of beauty, of life’s seasons. As well, Annette will be demonstrating a few techniques that she utilizes in her figurative and portrait work – incorporating the mixed media of walnut ink, oil paint, transfers and multiple layers of translucent drafting film. Attendees will gain insight into some of the various possibilities of working with this nontraditional medium. This demonstration is for all levels from beginner to advanced artist.

Now in her fifth decade of art practice, Annette has had a varied career spanning disciplines, media and genre. As a young artist, she depicted the prairie landscape using silkscreen printing as her medium of choice. Then in mid career, Annette became passionately involved in theatre design and followed that path for many years while still maintaining her role as an art educator. Today she works out of a studio in East Vancouver utilizing a variety of mixed painting and drawing media employing the human figure as the focus of her practice.
