Book with Blurb

December 1, 2009

After a trip to France last year, I made a photobook of my favourite photographs of the trip to give to my husband’s family. The book turned out fantastic, and this year, I was thinking of making another book to give to my family.

I was first introduced to www.blurb.com by a co-worker, and I thought I’d pass along this incredible website to you all. With the holidays coming and possible gift ideas looming, what better way to create a book of a wedding, family vacation, portfolio, cookbook of your favourite recipes, or a special trip?

The site is easy to use and allows you to choose whether it will be softcover or hardcover, how many pages, what size and then calculates how much this will cost you.

To begin, simply download the bookmaking software to your Mac or PC. Once you are ready, the templates are easy to manipulate. You can choose to use one of their templates (and there are lots to choose from), or you can import your own design via layout you’ve made yourself with Indesign or Photoshop. Want to add text? You can! Want to add three images to a page? You can! The possibilities are endless.

Once you’ve created your book, you can choose between making the book open to the public or keeping it private. If you choose to make your book public, it can be sold on the Blurb website. Additionally, you can opt to offer readers a preview of the first 15 pages of your book to help them decide if they want to make a purchase.
To increase your search ranking, you are able to add subtitles, tags, categories, and descriptions.

What makes these books different from other sites that do the same thing is that anyone can have a bookstore quality book. Choose from Softcover, Hardcover, Dust Jacket or Hardcover, ImageWrap.

Each book features 4-color printing on 80# coated, matte standard, or 100# silk-finish Premium Paper (this is an extra cost but could really make your images pop). Books can be from 20 to 440 pages using standard paper, or from 20 to 160 pages using Premium Paper. Prices start at just $4.95. Please note that prices are listed in US dollars, but they ship to Canada. They do offer flat rate shipping, so it’s best to send all your books at once to only pay shipping for one order.

Once uploaded and ordered, your book will arrive in approximately 7 to 10 business days.

I find this site very easy to use and navigate and I‚Äôm super excited to see what my book will look like. I know it’ll be amazing!
