The reigning “Queen’ of the the vast and renowned
gamut of Fabriano paper products, this paper was
documented in price lists dating back to the end of
the 800’s in the «imperial» size (22×30 inches): the
elassic Anglo-Saxon watercolor paper size (now
96x/6. format, as adopted in all professional papers
today). The name “Artistico” was officially coined
in 1978, when it appeared for the first time in the production records of the mould cylinder machine number 5 of that time.
Artistico watercolor paper is made with 100% cotton
fibers using a mould- cylinder machine.
This one-of-a-kind industrial process, also known as
«mano macchina» (a machine able to make paper
similar to hand-made process), replicates the typical
characteristics of handmade paper.
In this process, a cylinder covered by a finely
perforated mesh, is immersed in a vat where the pulp
is held, (mainly water and cotton). The slow turning
of the cylinder allows the water to pass through the narrow cylinder wires, gently and randomly
depositing the fibers onto the mesh to form a soft
fabric. Papermakers define such a paper as «Square»,
in as much as the fibers, autonomous in respects to the direction of the machine, have no geometric
Animal gelatin sizing was invented right
here in Fabriano.
A fundamental innovation, which today
has further evolved in the ‘Artistico” paper
by becoming «Vegan friendly».
All of the ingredients used in production
are free of all animal products, as is the sizing,
which is plant-based.
A significant development that is even more
respectful of those who follow a vegan lifestyle.
