Sandy Kay

Sandy Kay Art

Sandy Kay’s artistic career has developed on many levels. While working towards becoming a full-time painter, she worked as a Graphic Designer, a theatre set and costume Designer, and a greeting card designer and publisher as well as
teaching art workshops and classes.

Sandy has studied extensively, attending classes at the Chicago Art Institute, East Carolina University and Miami Dade College and has studied with master artists whose work she admired. She is also an avid reader and experimenter and
considers her painting abilities to be mostly self-acquired.

Born in California, Sandy grew up on the East Coast of the U.S. and lived in the Florida Keys most of her adult life before moving to Vancouver BC in 1999. Sandy has always had her own studio/gallery, most recently on Granville Island in Vancouver. She recently relocated to the Sunshine Coast of BC and splits her time between Southern
California and Halfmoon Bay, BC., maintaining working studios in both locations.

Sandy Kay’s paintings are very emotion-based and she works in both classic and contemporary styles, from the abstract to impressionistic to realistic. While her work spans a broad range of subjects and styles, from character portraits to landscapes and seascapes to large abstracts, the commonality can be found in their stories. Sandy strives to create a feeling rather than portray a picture, to evoke a response from the viewer and create a sense of time and place in this rapidly changing world. We often miss the small moments, the obvious unseen, the people on the sidelines…Sandy focuses on these, capturing something in her paintings that might otherwise be missed in our fast-moving world.

Sandy’s paintings have sold internationally, and have found homes in England, Germany, Dubai, the Caribbean, China and throughout the U.S. and Canada. They are included in many corporate collections and the permanent collection of Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour in Toronto and the archive collection of Mount
Royal University in Calgary. She is a signature member of CSPWC, AFCA, and CIPA.

She was invited to be one of the artists in the prestigious book Artist’s of BC Volume II in 2010, ia featured artist in the International Contemporary Masters book, Volume 7 in 2013. She was also honoured recently as one of the 10 Canadian artists to be invited to exhibit in the Fabriano Watercolour Invitational Exhibition in Fabriano, Italy.
