Deryk Houston

Deryk Houston's work was featured in the National Film Board of Canada documentary, "From Baghdad to Peace Country" (Director: Sherry Le Page. )
His work has been exhibited in one man exhibitions in the former Soviet Union, Scotland, Iraq, and the United States.
Deryk's work is included in many private and public collections including the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.
He has completed large scale ground art projects in Iraq, Canada, and Scotland in support of children's rights.
Much of his work is about the earth and creating conditions for seeds to grow……..a metaphor for the search for peace.

Selected Professional Achievements:

-Sept 2010 - invited to Baghdad, Iraq, for an international art symposium, by the director of the Baghdad National Art Gallery
-March 2010 - One man exhibition at Canada House Gallery, Banff, Alberta
-July 2009 - one man exhibition at the Gracefield public Art Gallery,Scotland.
-Fall 2008 - Invited to give a talk and presentation at MIT in Boston through the support of Dr. Noam Chomsky's office.
- February 2003 -National Film Board of Canada , world premier of "From Baghdad to Peace Country".
A documentary on Deryk's Peace Sanctuary in British Columbia, Canada
- October 2002 -Invited back to Iraq to supervise the construction of Deryk's 24foot tall bronze sculpture.
(Became a casualty of the subsequent invasion).
- May 2002 -one man exhibition, Paintings from children's book, "Echoes from the Square", at the International Institute of Boston. USA.
- April 2002 - Invited to Iraq by the Iraqi minister of culture for an international art exhibit, "Art for Mankind"
- April 2002 - permanent "Peace Sanctuary" ground art project constructed in North Eastern BC near Hudson's Hope,BC Canada,
in support of children and the people of Iraq.
- Aug 2001 -one man exhibition, Castle Douglas Public Art Gallery, Scotland (Stewartry Museum)
- July 2001 -field art in Scotland (Twenty acre field) in support of the children and people of Iraq
- March 2001 -Art Expo in New York, USA
- January 2001 -Bomb shelter art piece installed in permanent collection/Baghdad Arts Center, Iraq
(Destroyed during the 2003 invasion)
- June 2000 - sanctions painting installed in permanent collection/Baghdad Arts Center, IRAQ. (Destroyed during the 2003 invasion)
- June 2000 -Mother and Child art project in large hay field near Victoria, BC
- May 2000 -One man Exhibition and presentation at Kelowna Public Art Gallery
- April 1999 - Ground drawing of child completed in Baghdad, Iraq
- July /Aug.1998 -painting , "Callous acceptance" exhibited as part of "Fast for life" demonstration outside the US Mission
- to the United Nations building in New York
- July 1998 - painting , "Callous acceptance" on display at National Fellowship of reconciliation conference, Indiana, USA.
- Sept 1998 - Children's book by Elizabeth Wellburn. Title: "Echoes From The Square" Deryk's paintings used for the book.
