Using all natural ingredients, vegetable based oils and pure essences and botanicals you will learn how to make your own handmade spa products. You will be provided with electronic handouts and additional soap recipes. After the course you will become a soap and sugar scrub maker and leave the lab with your own handmade beauty products. This is an introductory course with the goal of preparing you for to setting up a small soap lab at home. We will be using silicone muffin pans for your soap molds, if you want specific shapes and are planning to bring your own molds please contact BLIM prior to the course. Your soap will not be ready right away, it needs 48 hours to cure before you can slice them.

This class will cover the following while Roberta demonstrates how to make soap the old fashioned fight club way.

Brief history and basic chemistry of soap making
Necessary materials, supplies and equipment
Safety considerations when working with sodium hydroxide
Coloring soap naturally with herbs, spices & clays
Using pure essential oils to scent your soap naturally
Insulating, cutting, curing and storing your finished soap
Due to the nature of making soap from scratch, this class is a demonstration after which students create their own custom bars during the class. You'll leave with very thorough handouts and enough information to make vegetable-based soap from scratch. This class uses only vegan / vegetarian ingredients.

Roberta Wover: Grew up in Winnipeg and spent most of her time obsessing over the scents of flowers in her grandmothers' gardens. Soon after completing graduate school she began to formulate her own products as gifts and explore perfumery. Soapmaking is harmony between art and science and it continued to be the medium to express her creativity and grow her expertise. And as her ideas grew, so did her customers who quickly became addicted to her fresh and luxurious products.

A move to Vancouver inspired Roberta to create a natural bath and body line using only premium natural ingredients and illustrated her passion for natural perfumery. Her company, RIPE Artisan Botanicals is available online, through select retailers and at BLIM's monthly community market.
