Painting the Portrait: Alla Prima in Oils with Justin Ogilvie

Downtown Vancouver
Sat, December 16, 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

December 12, 2017 – Please note: This demonstration is now full, but please sign up for the wait list: often there is an attendee who needs to cancel. Thank you for your interest!

In this demonstration, Vancouver artist and educator Justin Ogilvie demonstrates how to paint the alla prima portrait in oils while working from a photographic source.

Justin builds the portrait step-by-step utilizing a combination of both traditional techniques (underpainting, grisaille, impasto, glazing) and contemporary techniques (artificial colour, palette knife, squeegee, scraping, textures).

Emphasis will be placed upon observational accuracy, building skin tones, and shifting colour temperature within the thirds of the face, as well as how to blend smoothly and use expressive brushstrokes.

You will learn how to use and break the rules in portraiture, providing new possibilities for their own practice.

Space is limited and registration is required.
Please visit Opus Downtown Vancouver or contact them at 604‑678‑5889 to register.

Justin Ogilvie is a Vancouver based artist and educator, with an MFA from the University of Alberta, and a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Ogilvieā€™s painting practice explores the tension between traditional and contemporary modes of painting; specifically, examining how the self is constituted within interpersonal relationships, our declining connection to nature, and today's digital technology.
