Paint the Portrait in Oils with Justin Ogilvie
Sat, January 28, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
January 13, 2017 – Please note: This demonstration is full and no further registration will be taken. Thank you for your interest!
Build a portrait in oil from the base up!
In this demonstration, Vancouver artist and educator Justin Ogilvie will demonstrate how to paint the alla prima portrait in oils while working from a photographic source.
Ogilvie will build the portrait step-by-step utilizing a combination of both traditional techniques including underpainting, grisaille, impasto, glazing, and contemporary techniques such as artificial colour, palette knife, squeegee, scraping, textures. Emphasis will be placed upon observational accuracy, building skin tones, and shifting colour temperature within the 'thirds of the face'.
Various techniques in paint application from thin-to-thick, dark-to-light, and dull-to-bright will be addressed throughout, as well as how to blend smoothly and use expressive brushstrokes. Attendees of this demonstration will learn how to use and break the rules in portraiture, providing new possibilities for their own practice.
Space is limited and registration is required.
Please visit Opus Granville Island or contact them at 604‑736‑7028 to register.
Justin Ogilvie is a Vancouver based artist and educator, with an MFA from the University of Alberta, and a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Ogilvie’s painting practice explores the tension between traditional and contemporary modes of painting; specifically, examining how the 'self' is constituted within interpersonal relationships, our declining connection to nature, and today's digital technology.
Ogilvie exhibits nationally and internationally within commercial, municipal, and artist-run-centre galleries, and is part of private and public art collections, as well as the recipient of numerous juried and provincial awards.
Since 2000, Ogilvie has been a devoted teacher, both independently and at multiple universities [Emily Carr, the University of Alberta, Red Deer College, and the Vancouver Film School]. Justin is also the founding member of the upcoming 'Vancouver Painting School' initiative, with a curriculum designed to balance technical and conceptual developments in historical and contemporary painting.
