November 4th saw the culmination of the hard work and dedication of Corwin Hiebert and Eileen Roth (plus a horde of volunteers) into the one-day mash up that is CREATIVEMIX—Vancouver’s ideation conference. This was the second time that they have put on this event and it was, by all accounts, a smashing success.

On event day, when you walked in to the event location at the Roundhouse Community Centre you found your self immediately in the CREATIVEEX—what Corwin likes to refer to as an inspirational meet-up space that feels like an art show meets grade 6 science fair meets idea expo. Honestly, that pretty much sums it up—it was excellent!...Read more

Towards the Light

“You found your wings, lift slow through charcoal skies. Weighted, I remain.

“Seven years later, I move forward, choose light. Paint pictures not of you but for you—and even now I cannot find the words to write. Still just a heartbeat, still just a breath away, goodbye seems too strong a word for an absence only as complete as I choose to believe. Seven years later, I know that you would want to see me smile.” —Indigo...Read more

As part of this year’s Culture Crawl experience, Vancouver’s Alex Henderson is curating Process & Intent, a group exhibition at The Cultch that will feature a behind the scenes look at the artist’s creative process. New Workshops & Classes Section Live!

New Workshops and Classes Section

Ten years ago we set out to offer a community space online that would facilitate visual arts community education: our Workshops & Classes section where art teachers and art students seeking art education in BC could link up. Though our site was on the cutting edge of technology at the time, without further refinements we found it lagging behind as the years went on. While we loved our old Workshops & Classes area, technology has advanced enough that we can offer something better, so we decided to do just that.

Introducing our NEW Workshops & Classes Section...Read more

The Old School House: Mosaic 200

Like a mosaic, an art centre involves multiple elements coming together to create a whole much larger than each individual part. The Old School House Arts Centre (TOSH) in Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island is made up of many artists, musicians, volunteers and members who together have created a unique and distinctive venue. TOSH is celebrating its twenty-third year as a non – profit art centre and currently accommodates, in seven studios, twenty-five Resident Artists (painters, photographers, potters and a silversmith) who work full or part-time. The three galleries at TOSH are filled with monthly exhibitions for eleven and a half months of the year. To help celebrate the Olympics in British Columbia, TOSH hosted a national juried art show in February of 2010....Read more

Van Gogh Paintings Spring to Life on the Giant IMAX Screen

Van Gogh: Brush with Genius is an unprecedented look at the artist’s life revealed as never seen before. Van Gogh was a man who painted as he loved and who loved as he painted—with fire and passion. The film allows the audience to discover his life of genius, far removed from the ‘tragic artist’ for which he is known.

Now playing at the National Geographic IMAX Theatre in Victoria, Van Gogh traces the life of the artist, through his work and letters, from the time of his first canvas at age 27 to his death in 1890. Narrated by an actor playing the artist, it seems as if Vincent were in the next theatre seat, commenting on the events, sometimes in a fond manner, at other times seemingly somewhat annoyed....Read more

Teens Paint Under Lights at Camp Goodtimes

Imagine a summer evening, 67 teens full of gusto, 12 large canvases stretched tautly along tent walls, and dozens of palettes loaded with bright pools of paint. That was the scene at Camp Goodtimes situated in the forest beside Lake Loon, Maple Ridge. The annual summer camp, hosted by the Canadian Cancer Society, is for children and teens with cancer. This year is the 25th anniversary.

James Picard, renowned Canadian artist, teacher and humanitarian, spearheaded the class for the fourth consecutive year. Opus Framing & Art Supplies, along with other local businesses, contributed canvas and paint to help make it all happen. ...Read more
