Thank you to everyone who submitted to this event — submissions are now closed! Winners will be announced on October 1, 2014. Stay tuned!

Join your fellow photographers for the 2nd Annual Opus Big Picture!

Opus Art Supplies encourages creative individuals from across Canada to interpret the theme "Black & White", and explore their world through a different lens. You could win a Facemounted Print of your photograph reproduced by the Opus Digital Printing Service and a 1 year subscription to Sad Mag.

We invite both the avid photographer and the eager enthusiast to participate in this event by submitting a photograph they have taken showing their interpretation of this year's theme, "Black & White". Images must be submitted via email by August 31, 2014.

Three images will be selected by our judges, and winners will receive a copy of their digital print PLUS a 1 year complimentary subscription to Sad Mag, Quarterly Conversations About Arts & Culture! And all photographs will displayed on our website in the Opus Big Picture 2014 Gallery.

How To Enter

1. Download the Opus Big Picture submission form (a fillable, PDF form), open it with Adobe Reader, and complete the form. (See “How do I complete and save the fillable PDF form?” in “Click Tips” below for more information.)

After completing the form, we suggest you save it as a pdf, close the file and then reopen it in Adobe Reader, or other PDF reader, to ensure the information you entered has saved correctly. If you are unable to save your completed PDF, you may use this Word entry form instead.

2. Email your completed submission form and one (1) high resolution photograph interpreting the theme "Black & White" to info@opusartsupplies.com between July 1 – August 31, 2014.
(See “What are the specifications for the entry photographs?” in “Click Tips” below for more information.)

Please review the terms and conditions detailed under "Eligibility" below prior to submitting your submission form and photograph. Please allow up to 5 business days for us to process your entry. Once we have processed your entry, you will receive a confirmation email.

Good luck to all! We hope you enjoy the process of interpreting the theme of "Black & White" in the medium of photography.

Click Tips! (aka The FAQs)

This event is about digital photography. I shoot on film and then convert my images to digital. Is my work eligible?
Yes! While the majority of digital photographs are taken with a digital camera, we welcome film photographs that have been converted to a digital format.

I prefer to shoot in colour but the theme of this event is "Black & White". Does that mean my photograph must be shot in B&W?
Absolutely not! You are welcome to interpret the theme of "Black & White" with a B&W or colour photograph.

Am I allowed to edit and creatively alter my image?
Yes. As long as the image begins as a photograph taken by you and ends up as a digital file that fits our resolution criteria, we welcome your creative edits!

Is there any subject matter that will not be accepted?
Possibly. As Opus stores and the Opus website are family-friendly environments, we reserve the right to refuse any image that we deem potentially unsuitable for our audience.

Can I get an extension on the submission deadline?
Sorry, no. Submissions received to info@opusartsupplies.com after 11:59pm PST August 31, 2014 will not be eligible.

Is there a cash prize?
We do not offer a cash prize. The top three images will receive a Facemounted Print of their photograph reproduced by the Opus Digital Printing Service, and have their work featured online (on our website and in an email to our email subscribers).

What are the specifications for the entry photographs?

  • One photograph per person. The photograph entered must be submitted as a digital file:
    · JPEG (.jpeg, .jpg) or TIFF (.tif, .tiff) file format
    · saved as 8-bit colour, Adobe RGB 1998 colourspace
    · high resolution (150dpi minimum with the longest side (height or width) totalling 3150 pixels; or, if a 300dpi image is submitted, with longest side totalling 6,300 pixels)
    · not exceeding 1GB (gigabyte, or about 1000 MB) in file size.

Note: Some email providers will allow you to transmit up to 25MB attachments. If your email provider does not allow you to transmit your image due to its file size, you can send it our way via a service such as Dropbox. To share a folder with Dropbox, create a Dropbox account and a folder for your files, save your image and pdf files to the folder, and invite info@opusartsupplies.com to share the folder.

  • The JPEG or TIFF file you provide must be high resolution (minimum 150dpi), suitable to be printed without excessive pixelation up to 21" wide by 21" high (42 united inches).

    Example: To calculate how large your image file can be printed if it is at 3150 pixels wide x 2100 pixels high at 150dpi: (3150px ÷ 150dpi = 21") and (2100px ÷ 150dpi = 14") = 21" x 14" or 3150px x 2100px

How do I complete and save the fillable PDF form?
Depending on your browser, it can be as simple as clicking on the Opus Big Picture submission form link, filling out the form, and saving it to your computer. If you are unable to save your completed PDF, you may use this Word entry form instead.

    Notes about fillable PDF forms
  • Chrome and Firefox Browsers: Save and open the PDF with Adobe Reader instead of the Chrome or Firefox PDF Viewer.
  • Windows 8 built-in reader: Right click the black area outside the page, select "Save As".
  • Mac OS Preview: instead of clicking "Submit by Email", choose "Mail Selected PDF Document" from the File menu.
  • iOS or Android: ). The built-in PDF viewers on iOS and Android do not support fillable forms. You’ll need to download an Adobe Reader mobile app and open the PDF in the Adobe Reader mobile app to complete the form.

Will you confirm receipt of my photograph and entry form?
Yes. It is a real person checking our emails, not an automated system, so please allow 1 business day for us to confirm we have received your email. After that, please allow up to 5 business days for us to process your event entry. Once we have processed your entry, you will receive a confirmation email and a link to where you can see it online. As long as your submission is received at info@opusartsupplies.com by 11:59pm PST August 31, 2014 and fits the other criteria of this event, it will be processed and included in the judging.

If you have any questions, please feel free to send us an email at info@opusartsupplies.com or call us at 604-435-9991. Our offices are open Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm PST and we will endeavour to respond to your inquiry within 1 business day.

We will be updating this page as the competition date approaches and during the competition with more information as needed.
